No more Traveler

Old news, but I'm still really bummed that Traveler didn't get renewed for a second season on ABC. At first I thought the show really sucked, but good old tivo had recorded so many episodes that I ended up watching the entire season almost in one sitting because I was hooked.

Anyway, for those of you who were wondering what WOULD have happened, check out the Traveler Blog, its pretty cool when you get some closure on your fave cancelled shows.

I just got me my MARC7 membership to support the recording of the new Maktub album. I'm beginning to think those Robots are out to get $50 from all their friends ... (ahem, buster, spils)

Here's the deal. Maktub is recording a new album in May 2007. We're pulling together the team that engineered and produced our first two albums: Subtle Ways and what Washington Post music critic Michael Deeds calls "... 2002's soul-rock masterpiece Khronos". That would be producer Steve Fisk and Engineer Stuart Hallerman. We'll use your MARC7 membership to get back to our roots. Here's what you get in return:

Seattle Regional Spelling Bee - March 25th

Oooh, I was just checking out the upcoming events at Town Hall and noticed my most favorite local event of the year is coming up on March 25 at 1pm - the Regional Spelling Bee! Anyone want to come with me?

Location: Great Hall, enter on Seneca Street.

The Bee is back! Approximately 85 school spelling champions from King and Snohomish counties compete for the regional spelling title and a trip to Washington, DC for the 80th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee. The national finals will be televised in May on ABC. Presented by Town Hall Seattle, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, and 94.9 KUOW-FM.
Free, no tickets required.

hehee, i went to the Monster Truck Jam in Tacoma over the weekend with some friends.

It was AWESOME (and bursting with mullets)...talk about being exposed to American culture.

So Kate (via comment) and Dare (who stopped by in person) were nice enough to point out that I had made a couple of mistakes in my last entry about the Frankie J song "That Girl" and my intepretation of the lyrics:

Kate said: "I think you're supposed to add in the arms and legs. Just the torso is the coke bottle... lol!"

ok, so i'm like a week late but I'm so excited that project runway has started again (and how excited am i that i have a DVR so when I miss it I dont actually miss it - not that bravo doesn't rerun the same 5 shows every day). I love that show!

three movies

Been doing a lot of movie watching lately since being active isn't really an option.

Akeelah and the Bee - I saw this with Jasmine, Erik and Maggie. Very cute, a bit cheese but I can't help but love spelling bees! What is up with Laurence Fishburne always having the same character just in different movies? He was the exact same character as he was in the matrix, except for this time he was wearing an old man cardigan and had a gut instead of wearing leather.

Next was Brick - random tuesday night movie suggested by Shar and Dan complete with a 'fake' happy hour (much to Vaughn's dismay). Brick was actually a pretty good movie - sort of memento-ish. I went in knowing nothing about and came out pleasantly surprised. If you see it, let me know what you think she whispered after she told him the piece of info she had about his ex.

Finally, Thank you for Smoking, which was smartly written and entertaining. I have to say though, now that Katie Holmes has spawned Tom Cruise's child I can't look at her anymore - its so nasty to think about anyone having sex with that weirdo. Still, worth seeing. I'm sure most people dont have the strong adverse reaction to Tom Cruise related things. And no, I will not be seeing Mission Impossible 3.

Other than that, things are good...weather is getting better. yay!

more spelling bee goodness on the big screen

I still haven't seen Spellbound, but I just heard via my favorite evil corporation starbucks that there's a new spelling bee movie out. How fitting since I just went to the regional spelling bee this past weekend! I heart spelling bees!

Starbucks is using those sleeves that keep you from burning your hands as advertising for the movie - each sleeve has a word from a previous year's competition. Cute! Now I can learn a new useless hard to spell word each day with my venti soy latte.

Anyway, the movie is called Akeelah and the bee and it opens later this month. Anyone wanna come watch it w/ me?

Spelling bee this sunday

Ok, maybe this is a bit nerdy/weird but I'm so excited that there is a Spelling bee in town this sunday afternoon at Town Hall. I heard about it this morning on NPR and I totally want to go!

I love word games like crosswords and scrabble, but I can only ever recall participating in one spelling bee. I was scarred at the early age of 8 - it was the third grade: Mr. Shymanski's class. I was the 'smart' kid in the class and everyone expected me to smoke the competition. And what happened? I totally flopped and caved under the pressure. It killed my confidence for any future spelling contests in the future, and I never participated again. :(

aaaannyyyyways...

4 movies in one day

It's a long flight from seattle to shanghai (via Tokyo) ... a long BORING flight...thankfully there were a bunch of movies to watch on the plane. It started off strong, and went downhill ...

Walk the Line - Excellent - Wow, I thought this movie was great. I went in to this movie with sort of low expectations because the only friend review I remember is the one from Erik's friend Bethany who said it was like a made for TV movie. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, both of whom I'm usually very 'meh' about, were fantastic in their performances.

Pride and Prejudice - Good - I never read the book but enjoyed the movie. I now have a crush on that mopey dopey mr. darcy, Matthew MacFayden.

Elizabethtown - Cruddy - Even with Orlando Bloom this movie blew. I love that roadtrip idea, but really, who with a day job actually has time to do that?

Shopgirl - Worst - Oh, Steve Martin and Claire Danes, I used to think you guys were actually good actors. This is the best you could do? Though I did like the scene when Ray and Mirabelle break up - Mirabelle says "I can either hurt now, or hurt later” ... “now, I guess”, and gets up and walks away. Also, Jason Schwartzman looks like Brad Serbus.

Anyway, I'm wondering what i'm going to watch on the way home...I seem to have watched every chick flick possible in the northwest airlines catalog...

my two new favorite tv shows

I can't say I'm that huge of a TV fan but lately I've actually been following some shows. 24, which everyone and their mother has been telling me to watch for like ever, and two new ones Gamekillers and Distraction. Gamekillers has given me such insight into how guys are - I've had a number of conversations about this before with Mr. Chair but I never believed him - now there's an entire TV show about how guys get their game killed and how hard it is to keep their cool.

The other show, Distraction, is on comedy central and I watched a whole episode last night for the first time (previously I had only caught snippets). The premise is that you have to answer questions while being distracted by the most ridiculous things (last night contestants were strapped into electrocution chairs and got shocked every time they blinked) and at the end, the last contestant wins prizes, that is if they answer their questions before some horrible thing smashes in their prizes. There's something really really amusing about this show and I can't quite put my finger on it ...

hitchhiker's guide

mr. chair and I went to check out the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy yesterday. I've been really looking forward to it because i LOVE LOVE LOVE the bbc radio series - its one of my fave things to listen to on long road trips (I have the mp3s on my ipod)

Anyway, I guess because I'm so familiar with the original story, that I was pretty dissappointed with the movie - it just didn't do the book and radio show justice. Not to say it wasn't funny and cool in some parts.. but it definitely was a let down.

oh well...waiting for the summer blockbusters to come out...

In my native street french i tried to explain to my brother the inherent problems with a city dog, but being the dullard he is, he couldn't quite grasp the notion. I said it faster and slower all to no avail.
He came up with some bogus interpretation of my verbiage. I was thoroughly unamused and fell asleep in the back seat.

moc moc at the croc

I have to say that moc moc is definitely growing on me, and not just because I know some of the people in the band. Anyway, they were all decked out in their boy/girl scout uniforms for their show on tuesday which was really cute. I found it funny some band members weren't wearing beanies like everyone else in the band - prolly because large heads run in the family and their heads were too big to fit in them. ha ha! You should know that I mean that in the most honest and loving way, since Ingi (my best friend from university) also suffers from large-head-itis but I still think she's lovely anyway! Bring on the watermelon to help stretch the hat!

Anyway, they're playing another show this friday at the mars bar, home of the smallest stage and the place where i saw my very first moc moc show. You should go check them out! I'll be there :)

DeEtte had a "moment" at the show - I have never seen her bolt SO fast! Luckily, Walter and I kept everything going. Funny funny stuff.
